Fine Lumber - Large supplier of hardwood and plywood near ASMBLY. Offers some milling and panel cutting. You can walk the warehouse and pick out your own lumber. To purchase, walk the warehouse, pick out what you want, then call the phone number. If you're picking up plywood, they will usually let you drive through the warehouse, once you're ready to purchase.

Dakota Hardwoods - South Austin, East Stassney Lane. Cabinetry focused chain of lumber stores. Hardwood and plywood. You cannot walk the warehouse, but they will bring an entire pallet out to you to pick through. Excellent for cabinet hardware and parts. You walk into the front office, place your order (it does not have to be a firm order, but at least the species or product you want to look at). They give you a preliminary order form. Drive around back to the loading ramp and park. Walk up the ramp and clip the paper to the board at the roll up door. A lift operator will pick it up and bring the pallet(s) out to you to pick through. Lift operator will change the order sheet depending on what you select. Load up, go back to front with sheet, and pay.
Swift River Pecan - Small mill dealing mostly in pecan, in Fentress, TX. Between San Marcos and Luling. Some cypress, a little live oak. Lots of slabs, cookies and rough 4/4, 8/4, 12/4. If you're looking for spalted pecan, great place to go. Get some amazing pecans while you are there. Owner usually works the front and will walk you back to the lumber. Browse around. Prices are usually pretty good. Lower than going rate. Figured wood is particularly good here, but you do have to dig for it.
Kiln dried, solar kiln dried and air dried. About 20 species. Does some custom milling and large panel glue up. Cool place to check out. Slabs, cookies and planks.

Grizzly G0569 is a 7.5hp resaw monster.

Do not cut metal with this tool. This bandsaw is to be used for wood only, and only for resawing or straight cuts. No curves.

Woodshop Safety

For this saw, the red button on the power panel is the off button. If you use this button, you will need to twist it to reset it. It will take the blade more than a minute to come to a stop.

If you wish to use the brake pedal, push gently. It still will take a little while for the blade to stop running. The brake pedal will shut power off to the saw. (This is per Grizzly Technical Support, and is not stated in their current version manual).

Only stomp heavily on the brake pedal in an emergency.

No adjustments allowed, except for Fence & Cutting height.

This saw takes a 180" blade. We typically equip it with a 1" 3tpi Timber Wolf resaw blade.
* No blade changes - call a steward or report via red QR code.
* Do not adjust bearings or tension. Do not release tension.
* If you see a problem that you think needs these adjustments, report using any red QR code.

If you are cutting logs, use a fixture. You will have to build your own. It is a good idea to run a metal detector across logs.

Maximum cutting height is 16¼", maximum cutting width is 24½"

The cast-iron fence isn't super tall. We keep sacrificial MDF fences around to help with resawing taller material.

The brake pedal is mainly for emergency use. If you do use the brake pedal, push gently. It will take a little while for the blade to stop running. The brake pedal will shut power off to the saw.

Normal operations have been modified during the coronavirus pandemic to maintain safety and compliance at Asmbly. Where conflicts arise in policies documented elsewhere, the versions outlined here take precedence.
Rules & Expectations
* Our mask requirements follow APH recommendations and vary depending on what stage we are in. See details below in Stages in Austin's COVID-19 Risk-Based Guidelines. To verify what stage Austin is currently in, visit their website here.
** Note: Many of our members use Gill Masks.
*No food in the workshop areas.
** Closed drinks are permitted in all areas of the space, however food is restricted to the multipurpose room only.
* Stay home if you don’t feel well, if you have potentially been exposed, or if you have any of the symptoms of COVID-19 disease including but not limited to fever, rash, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, cough, loss of sense of taste or smell.

Stages in Austin's COVID-19 Risk-Based Guidelines
Asmbly has used Austin-Travis County's COVID-19 Risk-Based Guidelines, as well as many other sources, for guidance on adjustments to operations during various levels of severity during the pandemic. The stages have been updated and simplified to low, medium, and high indicating the risk of community transmission. Below are differences in our operations based on each stage.

All Stages
The following applies to all stages:

* Woodshop slots available for booking: 6 (+ artisan workbench)
* Members weekly allotted hours: 24

High
This stage indicates a high level of community transmission and risk. The city advises to restrict all activity outside the home to only what is "essential." Members are encouraged to consider whether their visit to Asmbly is truly essential during this time.

* Masks required regardless of vaccination status
* No in-person meetup groups at the space. Classes and work days still permitted.
** If you'd like to host a meetup virtually, contact membership@asmbly.org

Medium
* Masks optional for those who are fully vaccinated
** Masks encouraged for classes and in-person events
* In-person meetups at the space permitted if sponsored by an Asmbly member and approved by the board

Low
* Masks optional for those who are fully vaccinated
* In-person meetups at the space permitted if sponsored by an Asmbly member and approved by the board

Access Policies
General Info
* Facility hours are 5 AM - 2 AM, 7 days a week (i.e. 21/7/365).
* Areas or specific machines in the shop are listed in Skedda as "spaces".
* Each member may book up to a certain number of hours per week across all workspaces (count resets on Monday).
* You must provide a mobile phone number to complete your booking. This will not be visible to other members, except the Board of Directors and designated Skedda admins. This allows us a direct means to contact you in the moment should we need to speak with you during your reservation.
** Note: Only your name and Booking Title is visible to other members in Skedda, not the description or your personal contact information.
* All shop area/machine use at the space must be scheduled in Skedda - our online scheduling system.
** If you have NOT made a reservation via Skedda, you are NOT allowed to use machines or shop areas.
* There are multiple slots available for booking the woodshop. There is no difference between them, it simply allows for multiple members to work in the woodshop at the same time. Members booked for the woodshop at the same time should work together to clean and coordinate use of shared machinery.
** If you know you will be heavily using a specific tool in the woodshop during your reservation (e.g. router table), feel free to indicate that in the Booking Title field to let other members know. Note that this does not guarantee sole use of that equipment during your reservation.
** If another member booked concurrently in the woodshop has provided contact information or you wish to reach out to them through Discourse, you may contacting them to game plan in advance how you will work together in the shop.

Equipment-specific time limits
There are a few machines in the space with high demand which have limits on the length of bookings. Additionally, we only allow one "active" reservation at a time for these machines. An "active" reservation is defined as a reservation that will occur at some point in the future. A second active reservation may be made with "bumpable" in the Booking Title field. This indicates a soft reservation that another member may bump if they need the time.

* Lasers - max 3 hours
* Wood CNC - max 4.5 hours

How to Bump a Reservation
Reservations marked "bumpable" may be taken by another member if needed - this is called bumping a reservation. Member’s personal contact information is not shared in Skedda unless that member decides to share it in the title of their booking. If the member has provided a mode of contact and you are comfortable reaching out, you may do so directly. If a member has not provided their contact information in Skedda, you may also search for them in Discourse and reach out to them directly there.

If you would prefer not to contact the member directly, you may also email membership@asmbly.org and we will help make the adjustment. Remember we are a volunteer-run organization, so requests will take time to fulfill. Please give at least 24 hours advance notice when requesting help bumping another member's reservation and wait for confirmation before going to the space. If another member requests to “bump you” and take your soft reservation, please kindly respect their request.

Small Businesses
While many makerspaces do not allow businesses at all, Asmbly prides itself in serving as a small business incubator with an aim to accommodate small businesses. However, we must also ensure in doing so that it is not to the detriment of our other members. For this reason, we have additional booking restrictions for members who use the space for a common business.

* A single business may only book a max of 2 sessions on a machine per day, regardless of the number of Asmbly members the business has.
* Asmbly may impose further booking restrictions as necessary should a business's usage further impede accessibility to the broader community.

Cfstaley: /* Wood Shop */ - Added Large Bandsaw to Wishlist.

Asmbly is always interested in acquiring quality tools and machinery for use by its members. This page includes a selection of our priorities for 2022.

If you own one of these machines and would be interested in donating or hosting it at Asmbly for members to use, please email workshop@asmbly.org for more information. As a rule, Asmbly accepts hosting or donation of working, ready-to-use equipment. If you have a candidate machine that needs some attention before use, we may be able to arrange volunteer support for repairs prior to or concurrent with transfer to Asmbly.

Wood Shop
* A >20" helical-head planer: eg Laguna PX|22, Powermatic 201HH, or Ironwood P600. We had a nice jointer upgrade last year; one of these days we'll want to upgrade our planer to a similar league.

* A large tilting-head scroll saw: eg Excalibur 21. We have a couple small consumer-grade scroll saws but it can be hard to control a workpiece on a tilted table, and flat they're mostly redundant to the big lasers. A tilting-head saw can make cuts that would be very difficult otherwise. (We'll need two or more matching machines if we get a scroll saw class going.)

* Two more Laguna Revo 12|16 variable-speed midi lathes. Our woodturning classes are always popular and expanding our lathe fleet will allow us to accommodate more students.
* Large bandsaw: Powermatic or similar, 20" . Powermatic PM2013B-3 . More capability, foot brake, current equipment will not stay aligned.

Metal Shop
* A metal-cutting handheld circular saw: eg Milwaukee or Makita. These are really useful for making clean cuts in plate without breaking out the fiber laser.

* A portable bandsaw: eg Milwaukee or Wen. Comes in handy for random fabrication work, and is a lot easier to control than a sawzall.

* A big pedestal grinder with dust collection: eg Jet IBG-12 with stand. Our bench grinders are all smallish and messy. An upgrade would solve both problems.

* A 14" or larger semi-automatic cold saw: eg Dake 350SA. Our cutoff saws eat blades like crazy. A proper stationary cold saw with secure workholding and flood coolant would allow us to keep blades reliably useable for members.

* Manual Vertical Mill, 2+ hp, X&Y power feed and 3-axis DRO preferred: eg Bridgeport or KBC TUM-3VS. Our manual mill's kind of on the small side and doesn't have the rigidity of a full-size mill. We're likewise open to modern or vintage options, so long as it's in good shape.

* Mobile gantry crane, at least 1000lbs capacity. Electric hoist and lifting magnet definitely a plus but perhaps not strictly necessary. This would come in handy for a bunch of applications, but will be needed soon for a single operator to load material in the fiber laser.

* A sheet metal corner notcher: eg Jet HN-16N. We'd definitely want a benchtop model that can be stored on a shelf or under a bench when not in use.

* A second MultiMatic 220. We currently have one MM220 and one MIG welder. Replacing the old MIG with a second 220 would help with TIG classes and allow sharing of consumables.

<!-- Probably a bunch of other stuff can go here. Surface Grinder? Ironworker? D-Bit Grinder? -->

Electronics Lab
We are currently renovating our electronics lab to bring our outdated equipment up-to-date. Our full wish list for this renovation can be seen on Digi-Key here and here. Below are a few of the larger items we are looking for.

* Two oscilloscopes, 100+ MHz, 4ch digital bench, eg Rigol MSO5104 Plus.
* Two or more good basic handheld RMS multimeters, eg Fluke 115

* Two or more power supplies 30V 5A with several outputs, eg Siglent SPD3303X.
* Benchtop LCR meter, eg Instek LCR-6100
* Another Thermaltronics TMT-9000 and supplies

We are not currently accepting donations for electronics consumables such as capacitors, resistors, transistors, ICs, etc.

Textiles
Our new textiles area is off to a great start, but there's a lot of specialty equipment that we'd love to offer our community.
* two more Janone MOD-19s for introductory sewing classes
* a dressmaker's mannequin
* a steamer
* a self-threading serger, eg Juki MO-2000
* a longarm quilting machine with frame, eg Juki j350

General Operations
There are a few bits and bobs we need for day-to-day operations of the space
* K-Cups of any variety will always get used
* A color laser MFP (eg HP M480f or Canon MF743Cdw) would also be put to good use. We print a lot of class materials and having color would be helpful.

Cfstaley: Changed "finishes" to "materials"

Asmbly Makerspace is a volunteer-run organization — upkeep and care for the facility is your responsibility, and we ask you to think about how you will contribute to maintaining a clean, successful makerspace. Each member plays a part in helping the space to flourish, from keeping the workshop and bathrooms clean, to planning for the future and managing our finances. As we continue to grow, we need each member’s contribution of time and creativity to keep us thriving. Part of being a member is getting involved in the community to help out in some way (see Community & Volunteering).

Membership
Asmbly is an inclusive community where all are welcome. Membership is open to any individual over the age of 18.

As a member, your responsibilities are simple -- Clean up after yourself. Be courteous towards others (see How to Be Excellent). Pay your monthly dues. Follow shop policies. Only store materials in the area you have permission to do so. Volunteer where you can to help around the space.

Systems Used
We use several systems at Asmbly to ensure a well-rounded experience for members and minimize administrative burden (our admins are all volunteers!).

Neon
This system is used to manage memberships, classes, store purchases, donations, and more. Members can log into their Neon portal to make adjustments to their membership including updating credit cards, pausing, and restarting membership. In the portal, members can also register for classes and purchase items.

Skedda
To ensure availability of tools/shop space and reasonable occupancy levels, all shop/machine time must be scheduled. These reservations are made through our online scheduling system - Skedda. We have a private venue in Skedda meaning only invited users can register for our venue and see event information. Members are sent a registration link for Skedda once they have completed the onboarding process (see How to Join on our main website for more info).

Discourse
yo.asmbly.org is our online Discourse forum which serves as our main mode of communication for the space including announcements and most importantly community discussion. Members and non-members alike are encouraged to discuss projects and ideas with each other on the forum. We also use Discourse for reporting machine problems by posting in the appropriate Space Teams category. This gives all members equal access to information about the status of equipment at the space as well as learning opportunities on how to repair and maintain our tools.

As with face-to-face interactions, we ask all users on our forums to treat your fellow humans with respect. For more on our community guidelines, see this Discourse post here. Please note, none of our forums or community pages are an appropriate place for joke posts/sarcasm, personal attacks, antagonism, or off-topic discussion such as politics. Posts that demean the efforts of volunteers working to better the space are considered extremely harmful to our culture. Members with a history of problematic posts may be moderated or removed.

Having the ability to post in forums is a privilege. Everybody has the right to make a mistake and learn from it. Nobody has a “right” to post on a community page or monopolize a volunteer’s time in dealing with persistent behavioral issues.

Notifications
Because so much important communication occurs on our forums, we highly recommend all members check to ensure they are getting notifications for the categories most important to them. Check that your notification settings are set the way you would like by following this guide here.

If there is a specific area of the shop that you use heavily, you may consider "watching" this category so that you receive emails when there are new posts. This will keep you most up-to-date when machine problems are reported for this area. The Operations category is another useful one to watch as this is where we post updates about the space.

Wiki
This website you are currently on is our information hub for the space. There are two versions: a legacy ATXHS version and this Asmbly version. Asmbly and ATXHS combined in April 2021, however ATXHS had 10 years of operations and wiki contributions leading up to this time. To prevent confusion in policies and avoid countless hours sifting through data, this new wiki was created to reflect current Asmbly policies and procedures. The ATXHS wiki has a wealth of information about various tools at the space and is maintained for this and historical purposes.

Facility Access
Equipment
There are many tools and machines at Asmbly and we love to see members utilizing as many of them as possible. However, safety is of the utmost importance and some tools in the space require additional classes before members are authorized to use them (regardless of previous experience). If you are ever unsure of how to use a piece of equipment or need a quick refresher, ask before using it.

Tools that Require Training
<categoryTree mode="all", hideroot=on>Training_Required</categoryTree>

Broken, malfunctioning or dangerous equipment
We know that equipment sometimes breaks and accidents happen. It's imperative everyone knows when something is wrong so the appropriate volunteers can make sure equipment is safe to use and properly repaired. If you are using a piece of equipment and something breaks or you think something may be wrong with it, please do the following:

# Post about the problem on yo.asmbly.org, describing the issue and relevant circumstances. Tag @workshop to make sure the right people see it quickly.
# Attach a large white note to the machine that says OUT OF ORDER. If a red tag would be more visible, use that.
# Disable the machine by coiling up its cord, taping over the prongs of the plug, and taping it down next to your note.

Your goal is to make it so that a person cannot operate the machine without seeing your notice. Posting a note on the forum allows other members at the space to know that it needs repair and is down, and gives leadership visibility into where we are seeing repeated downtime. Once fixed, ‘[RESOLVED]’ should be appended to the title of the original post; if you notice this hasn’t been done, just reply and a moderator will correct the title.

If repairs are done, the volunteer workshop steward will reply to the forum post and discuss how to prevent similar problems in the future. If a piece of equipment is broken due to negligence, you may be asked to pay for repair/replacement and retake a lesson on how to use the machine.

Many members use the shop resources for production that supports their livelihood which may require work to be completed on a timeline. We cannot guarantee machine uptime as a volunteer-run shop and should all work to ensure the health of equipment at the space. With this in mind, please be respectful of all equipment in the space and treat it as if it were your own. Hiding or failing to report damaged equipment endangers other members and the livelihood of the community. It is a serious offense and grounds for termination of membership.

Hosting Equipment
Asmbly makes an effort to acquire and maintain equipment for members to use. Most of the equipment in the space is owned by Asmbly. However, some equipment belongs to members who generously share with the Asmbly community.

If you'd be willing to host a tool of interest to Asmbly, contact [Mailto:workshop@asmbly.org workshop@asmbly.org] to discuss before bringing it to the space. If you bring in tools or equipment without authorization, your tools or equipment may be disposed of at the discretion of the board. All hosted tools must have a hosting agreement on file with the Director of Facilities.

Donating Equipment
As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, Asmbly is pleased to accept donations that provide added value to the community. If you have something you'd like to donate, contact [mailto:board@asmbly.org board@asmbly.org] with information about the item(s). If accepted, we will provide a donation receipt for tax purposes.

Safety
Safety is everyone's responsibility. Each tool and machine requires its own unique safety precautions. Power Tool Institute, Inc. has safety videos under the Safety Education page of their website. The video “Power Tool Safety — It's In Your Hands” is a good place to start on broad safety guidelines. We recommend checking out PTI for all of their safety training materials in addition to the courses we offer in the space. As always, if you don't know how to use a tool safely, ask before using it.

The SawStop table saw has an emergency brake designed to prevent the user from cutting themselves rather than the material. This works off conductance and therefore can also be set off with wet/damp wood or other conductive materials. If the emergency brake is activated for any reason while you are using the SawStop, you are responsible for paying for a replacement brake and blade ($160). Please post in the Space Teams/Woodshop category on the forum at yo.asmbly.org to notify the emergency brake has been activated. The SawStop will also be out of service until a volunteer shop steward can replace these items. If there will be a lapse in equipment availability, the workshop team will due their best to notify members on the forum.

General Safety Regulations
* Never operate any machinery or tool while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
* Protect your eyes — wear safety glasses at all times while in the shop area.
* Protect your ears — wear ear muffs or ear plugs when in loud work areas.
* Protect your lungs — wear a respirator or face mask when doing work that affects air quality such as woodworking.
* Protect other people’s lungs —
** Use dust-collection every time when sanding or sawing. For many machines, dust-collection is set up to initiate automatically when you start using the machine (e.g. SawStop table saw and compound miter saw). Other tools like the orbital sander must be hooked up to a shop vac and turned on manually.
** Apply noxious materials outdoors including smelly paints, epoxies, aerosols, and solvents. Take care to not get spray paint on our building or the concrete.
* Respect your sharps — take the woodshop safety class and any specialty classes for machinery; lower blades when not in use (table saw, router, etc.).
* Protect surfaces — use paper table covers when working on benches and scrap cardboard or other materials to catch overspray; refrain from spraying in windy conditions.
* No projects in the aisle — keep aisles clear to prevent tripping.
* Check inside of machines for sawdust buildup, especially the bandsaws. If you don’t know how, ask another member or shop steward.
* Clean up any oil, dust, or other clutter you make immediately to prevent machine malfunctioning or potential fires.
* Work smartly — keep your hands and body out of the path of machines and secure loose items, clothing, or hair.
* Protect your body — no open-toed shoes, wear clothes appropriate for the tools you are using (all clothes 100% cotton when welding), take precautions to protect yourself from kickback on machines where this commonly occurs, such as the table saw.
* Never look at the welding arc — you will go blind!
* If a machine is not working, red tag it — See more details in Broken, malfunctioning or dangerous equipment.
* Return tools home — Put tools back where they go and wrap cords.
* Communicate — If tools are missing or broken, post on yo.asmbly.org in the respective Space Teams category.
* Dispose of materials properly — Clean up scrap and take out the trash and recycling (see Materials & Waste).
* Pets are not allowed — our lease agreement prohibits animals on site, therefore in accordance with our lease, no pets or animals allowed.

Materials and Waste
Scrap
Many projects result in scrap material. Although these materials can be useful for other member’s projects, we can quickly get overrun with scraps. As a result, we must limit scraps left in the shop to what can fit onto our scrap cart. If there isn’t room on the scrap cart, then either trash scrap on the cart to make room for your scrap or trash your scrap.

Trash
In the back of the building we have a large locked trash dumpster labeled Asmbly. The key hangs by the back door closest to the dumpster. The vast majority of the materials disposed of at Asmbly belong in the trash dumpster. After taking trash to the dumpster, please shut the lid and put the lever down. Asmbly pays for trash pickup, so bringing trash from outside to be disposed of at Asmbly’s expense is strictly prohibited and grounds for termination of membership. This affects funds available for upgrading equipment and buying new machinery.

Recycling
In the back of the building next to the trash dumpster, we have a recycling dumpster. It can be difficult to determine what is recyclable and what is not. For instance, although paper and cardboard (which are recyclable) are made from wood, wood is NOT recyclable. Please limit the items you put in the recycling dumpster to only what is allowed by the City of Austin’s streamline recycling guidelines.

Note that items containing food particles are not recyclable and should be placed in the trash dumpster.

<!-- === Oil and Oil Filters ===
Texas law prohibits the disposal of oil and oil filters in dumpsters. While you are welcome to use the autobay to change your oil, you must take this waste with you when you leave. Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has a “Used Oil Recycling Program” you can participate in to properly dispose of these items.-->

Storage at Asmbly
In an effort to keep Asmbly clean and organized, we have rules about how materials and projects can be stored here. You are required to take your projects with you when you leave for the day, however if circumstances prevent you from doing so there are options available. Anything left at the space is at your own risk and likely to be discarded if it violates our storage policy as outlined below. Each member is responsible for maintaining a safe, neat, and professional workspace.

Storage Policy Overview
* Any items stored in the workshop must be in an approved storage area and require a storage ticket (hanging on the wall by the shop bathroom - fill the form out completely with name, date, and phone number).
* Your items must be safely and neatly arranged.
* There is no storage under the workbenches without documented special permission.
* Failing to properly label stored items or exceeding the maximum storage time without documented approval may result in disposal of stored items.
** Any items exceeding the maximum posted storage time will receive a text message, email, or Discourse post warning of their violation, then will be disposed of within 7 days. If no contact information is provided, items may be disposed of at any time.

Refer to the image and table below for info on acceptable storage areas and max storage time allowed.
Long-term Storage
If you have a project that is too big to take home with you every day, and will take more than 1 week to complete, you may request special exemption storage in another area by submitting an application BEFORE leaving items in the space.

Other storage areas are a very limited option that is available on a case to case basis depending on storage availability and storage size needs. Requests for special exemption storage must include an estimate of space needed and length of time for project to be completed. Note that long-term storage is only approved for 30 days at a time. If you need more than 30 days, you will need to reapply. You will also be asked to provide regular reports of project progress to the board as you work on it.

Address your request, along with project information and space requirments to Leadership@asmbly.org. You will be informed on where it is best to store it at that time.

Paid Storage
If you require routinely storing tools or materials at Asmbly, we have limited paid storage options available. Currently, we have 2'x2' spaces available for rent on a monthly basis for $25/space/month in the loft above storage area C and E. Email membership@asmbly.org if you are interested in acquiring a space.

If you have any doubt about whether you are following the storage policy, immediately post on yo.asmbly.org or email [Mailto:workshop@asmbly.org workshop@asmbly.org].

If you have a project that is too big to take home with you every day, and will take more than 1 week to complete, you may request storage in area E (specials exemption area) by submitting an application BEFORE leaving items in the space.

Storage area E is a very limited option that is accessed on a case to case basis depending on storage availability and storage size needs. Requests for special exemption storage must include an estimate of space needed and length of time for project to be completed. Note that long-term storage is only approved for 30 days at a time. If you need more than 30 days, you will need to reapply. You will also be asked to provide regular reports of project progress to the board as you work on it.

The USCutter MH871-MK2 is a 30" vinyl cutter.

MH871-MK2.jpg

If you are going to operate the machine -- please be aware of the following:

* You are expected to bring your own vinyl, and clean up when you're done.

* You are expected to buy your own blades, and bring them. They aren't expensive and can be purchased here for $12: http://www.uscutter.com/MH-Series-Vinyl-Cutter-Compatible-Blades-45-and-60-Degrees

* You are not expected to bring your own blade holder, but it is a good idea to have one if you're going to do lots of vinyl work. Ours might be missing/damaged/worn (who knows!) so for the best results, pick one up for $30: http://www.uscutter.com/USCutter-MH-Blade-Holder

* If the cutting strip starts getting worn out, new ones are available here. With regular use, it's generally considered a good idea to replace it every 6 months: http://www.uscutter.com/Cutting-Strip-for-MH-Series-Cutter-Plotter-Various-Sizes

Software
<!--

The vinyl cutter is connected to the Windows 7 computer that's in the middle of the table and has hostname "atxhs-design-3". It's not the Windows 10 computer closest to the vinyl cutter. The connected computer has a full version of Sure Cuts a Lot 3 Pro installed on it. The computer itself is located under the desk (you have to open a cabinet to access it).

* Front USB ports on the computer don't work; plug your USB key either in the back or into another machine and network share it.
-->
* The vinyl cutter uses only vector artwork. Any bitmap images or raster effects in your file will be ignored. Unlike laser cutters, the vinyl cutter software doesn't care about line thickness or color, or whether shapes have any fill colors specified. If your artwork depends on strokes or fill patterns, then you'll want to convert them to pure paths before import (Illustrator can do this well; Inkscape not so much). Otherwise, the cutter will only follow the center line of any stroke while ignoring its width; fill patterns will be ignored altogether.

* You'll need to reverse your artwork when cutting heat transfer film and toner or sublimation transfer paper, but not when cutting signage vinyl or contour cutting inkjet heat transfers. You can either reverse it ahead of time or within the vinyl cutter software.

* Sure Cuts a Lot had trouble importing PDF and EPS files exported from Inkscape. It was able to import "Plain SVG" just fine. Any fonts used by the SVG file will have to be installed locally on the same computer, unless you convert your text to paths ahead of time.

* You'll see the vector outlines in red when first importing your file (in the preview window) and later on when you hover the mouse over individual shapes. Pay them attention as these are the actual paths that will get cut. If you see any overlapping artwork, a quick fix is to select all shapes, open the pop-up menu with a right click, and choose Path->Union to combine everything into a single non-overlapping compound path.

* Double check the Cutter Settings dialog once before starting. Note any numeric values you enter will change slightly the next time you open the dialog (floating point rounding errors?):
** X Resolution: 0.980, Y Resolution: 0.984. The hardware itself will cut slightly oversize dimensions, so this provides a correction in the software.
** Blade Offset: 0.5. The correct blade offset depends on the angle of the blade. For a 45° blade, which is the most common type and should be already installed in the blade holder, the correct offset is 0.5mm. This YouTube video explains what this setting is for.
** Overcut: 1-2mm. Should be enabled and set to something small, but exact value doesn't matter. It overlaps the cuts on closed shapes to make sure they are completely cut out.

Hardware
* Verify the knife height in the blade holder is set correctly. The tip of the knife should just barely protrude past the end of the blade holder. To check it, remove the blade holder (by unscrewing the brass locking knob on the carriage), hold it in your hand like you would a pen, then use medium pressure to cut a little square or circle in your material. It should cut all the way through your vinyl (i.e. it weeds easily without tearing), but should not break through the release liner underneath (scoring the release liner is ok). To adjust the height, loosen the brass locking ring on the blade holder, rotate the silver ring to move the blade holder barrel up or down, then re-tighten the brass ring to lock the height setting in place.

* Always set the origin on the cutter before starting each new cut. Press the Offline/Pause button, then use the arrow keys to position the carriage and feed the material to where you want to start cutting from. Be sure to finish by pressing the Origin button, and not pressing the Offline/Pause button a second time.

* Speed: 100mm/s, Force: 100g are good starting points (settable on the MH control panel). Double check these as they are easy to change on accident (e.g. you intended to move the carriage but forgot to press the Offline/Pause button). You can press the Test key (don't forget to set origin first) to cut a small builtin design and verify the speed/force settings are correct for your material (i.e. make sure it weeds easily).

* If the software complains that it can't communicate with the cutter try power cycling the cutter (power switch on the left side against the wall). Merely pressing the Reset button on the cutter wasn't enough to resolve this. This error has only happened occasionally, and only right before starting a new cut.

* There's a ruler on the front and back of the cutter. Lining up your vinyl with both helps ensure it will feed (aka. track) straight through. While in Offline/Pause mode (i.e. when the LED next to that button is lit), you can verify your material tracks correctly by manually feeding it using the up and down arrow keys. It doesn't have to be perfectly straight, just straight enough to complete your cut without the blade running off of the edge.

* Make sure all 3 pinch rollers are engaged on your material, even if it's not very wide. Also make sure that every pinch roller wheel is positioned only over the knurled part of the metal feed roller underneath. Right above the slot, there are two white marks (like a wide upside-down U) to indicate the area you should stay away from with the pinch rollers.

* Be sure your material's release liner is facing down when loaded into the cutter. Signage vinyl goes in paper side down. Heat transfer film goes in glossy side down.

* If your material is still slipping, you can adjust the clamping pressure using two thumb screws on top of the pinch rollers. You should also leave some slack in your material between the feed rollers and your roll of vinyl, so the cutter doesn't have to struggle when feeding new material. Likewise, double check that your material hasn't tracked off of a pinch roller or tracked all the way against the sides of the slot.

* Verify that the locking knob on the carriage is tight and the blade holder is secure. When cutting thicker and tougher material like StripFlock or glitter, it's possible for the blade holder to ride up in the carriage clamp and stop cutting altogether. Double check that the lip of the blade holder is resting directly on top of the carriage clamp. If it keeps riding up, try wrapping some blue painter's masking tape around the blade holder where the carriage clamp will grip it.
