Volunteering

Volunteer tasks associated with clay recycling are part of the Ceramics Steward-On-Duty to-do list. Volunteers may not log separate hours for volunteer labor associated with this task.

Bucket Guidelines

Dry Clay

  • Best for: trimmings from wheel throwing or hand building, fully dried broken pieces
  • Put clay scraps into the appropriate 5 gallon bucket
    • The drier the better
    • Only unfired clay (no glaze, no fired clay, no other contaminants)
    • Absolutely no water - if your clay is wet, it does not go in this bucket

Slop

  • Best for: slop from wheel throwing, slip from handbuilding
  • Put clay slop into appropriate 5 gallon bucket
    • When possible, strain out as much excess water as possible before adding your slop to this bucket - water will fill up these buckets fast!
    • No glaze water or other contaminants

Locations

  • Buckets have one location - between the wheel sink and the kiln drop off and pick up shelves (south wall of the studio)

Problems or Bucket Getting Full?

Notify us using the Problem Report (asmbly.com/problem) when the buckets are ¾ or more full.

Recycling Steps

Member and Teacher Responsibility

  • Add dry clay scraps and slop to the appropriate buckets
  • Notify Winnie with a Problem Report when the buckets are ¾ or more full

Volunteer Responsibility

Make the Mix

  • Dry Clay: If clay scraps are not fully dried out, dry out in the sun until fully dry (crumbly/brittle)
  • Slop: Strain clay slop and mix with fully dried scraps, add water as needed
  • Initial Mix: Make sure everything gets submerged
  • Wait: Let sit for 24 hours or longer

Dry It Out

  • Mix Again: Hand mix or use heavy duty paint mixer to homogenize the newly mixed scraps and slop (should be very wet clay texture)
  • Dry: Spread out onto Hardibacker sheets
    • If left outside (especially if out in the sun), check every 1-2 hours until pliable
    • If left inside, check every 12-24 hours until pliable

Prep It For Use

  • Slam Wedge: Slam wedge together to homogenize mix
  • Wedge: Cut into smaller chunks and spiral or ramshead wedge until there are no bubbles
  • Bag: Bag up into old 20lb bags, secure tightly

Recycled Clay Usage

Recycling clay is a very labor intensive process, if you volunteer to help with the process you will get first dibs on the free recycled clay. Remaining Recycled Clay will be used for classes, CSIs, etc.
