Steward On Duty

From Asmbly Wiki

What is a Steward on Duty?

A Steward on Duty (SOD) is a friendly volunteer available in a specific shop area to assist Asmbly members. They can:

  • Help move materials
  • Answer questions about shop equipment and policies
  • Troubleshoot project issues or guide you to helpful resources

Note: SODs are not necessarily experts! They’re here to support you and help you find the answers you need.

Which Shops Have SOD Support?

As of July 2025, the SOD program is active in the following shops:

  • Ceramics Studio
  • Woodshop

More shops may be added in the future!

When Are the SOD Times?

The Asmbly Events Calendar is the most accurate and up-to-date resource for SOD times. If an SOD shift is canceled or rescheduled, the events calendar will reflect that change before any other platform (e.g., social media, Wiki, Discourse).

Current SOD Hours

  • Ceramics Steward on Duty
    • Tuesdays 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
    • Saturdays 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
  • Woodshop Steward on Duty
    • Saturdays 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM

How Do I Use SOD Time?

To get help from a Steward on Duty:

  1. Book time in Skedda for the appropriate shop during an SOD shift
  2. Be an active Asmbly member
  3. Look for the steward wearing a nametag, apron, or vest
  4. Ask for help – even if they look busy! Supporting members is their primary job during this time

If no one needs assistance, SODs may perform maintenance, tidy up, or update the Wiki.

How Can I Become a Steward on Duty?

Want to help out? Great! Here’s how to become an SOD:

  1. Join the Volunteer Program
  2. Talk with the Volunteer Coordinator
  3. Shadow an existing SOD shift
  4. Connect with your Shop Lead
  5. Sign up for SOD shifts once you're approved

The SOD program is a great way to deepen your skills, support the community, and earn volunteer credit.

The SOD program was created to provide new makers extra support in the shop space. If you have ideas on how to meet that goal, we'd love to hear it!
