Safety

Universal Safety

  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially when handling large materials.
  • Do not approach anyone operating equipment. Stand patiently in their field of view.

Use Case

The 3D Scanner can make 3D models of physical objects.

We don't currently require Skedda bookings to use the 3D Scanner.

Consumables

Asmbly does not provide these, but you may find them useful.

  • Mounting putty (blue tack) will help hold your item in certain orientations.
  • 3D scan spray/Talc powder will help the 3D scanner to capture highly reflective, transparent and deep black surface.

Operation (pictures encouraged)

You will probably want to move the scanner and laptop to a table that provides more space to work.

Connect Cables

Plug all cables into both the scanner and the laptop.

Power On

Turn on the scanner by pressing the power button for at least 2 seconds.

Launch Software

Open the EXScan software.

Calibrate

For optimal results and accuracy, calibrate the scanner before starting any scans. Follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate using the calibration plate (a square board with dots).

Optional: When scanning models with color texture, perform a white balance calibration using a white piece of paper.

Scan and Output

Once calibration is complete, position your model at the center of the turntable, then click on "New Project."

Select a save directory, enter a project name, and choose either "Texture Scan" or "Non-texture Scan."

EXScan Texture Choice.png

Select the appropriate brightness to minimize red areas in the live camera feed. The default turntable steps are set to 8, which works well for most items, but feel free to adjust if necessary. Then, click Start Scan on the right to begin the scanning process.

Once the scan completes after the 8 turns, click on Apply Edit to complete the current scan.

Adjust the orientation of the item to capture any missing areas from the first scan, and repeat the process as needed. Once you have captured sufficient detail around the item, click Global Optimization to complete the scan.

The software will align all of the scan. If the result looks good, hit Confirm.

Once the scan has been aligned, turn the point cloud into mesh by clicking on Mesh Model.

Cleanup

Universal Cleaning Guide

  • Return the equipment to neutral.
  • Sweep up any dust and debris around the tool, your table top, and the floor - both in the equipment area and your work area.
  • Clear the floor of any tripping hazards, like power cords.
  • Empty trash cans and dust collectors that are halfway full or more into the Asmbly dumpster behind the workshop.
  • Leave the shop 110% better than you found it.

Please put the 3D scanner and the laptop back on the table when you're done and make sure all of the cables are there. Plug in the laptop's power cable.
